Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon often described as Paris of The Middle East. Beirut was named the top place to visit in 2009 by The New York Times. It was also listed as one of the ten liveliest cities in the world by Lonely Planet in 2009.
Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's coastline with the Mediterranean sea, it serves as the country's largest and main seaport, and also forms the Beirut Metropolitan Area, which consists of the city and its suburbs.
Beirut holds Lebanon's seat of government, and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy with its city centre, Hamra, Verdun, and Ashrafieh-based corporate firms and banks. The city is the focal point of the region's cultural life, renowned for its press, theatres, cultural activities, and nightlife. After the destructive Lebanese civil war, Beirut underwent major reconstruction, and the redesigned historic city centre, marina, pubs and nightlife districts have once again rendered it a tourist attraction (there's no war there now).
Beirut has a Mediterranean climate characterized by a hot and virtually rain-free summer, pleasant fall and spring, and cool, rainy winter. August is the hottest month of the year with a monthly average high temperature of 29 °C (84 °F), and January and February are the coldest months with a monthly average low temperature of 10 °C (50 °F).
There's a lot to see and experience in Beirut - sightseeing, shopping, cuisine, and nightlife. The city has sleek, modern buildings alongside arabesque Ottoman buildings, giving Beirut a unique and distinctive style often not seen in other Middle Eastern cities.
One of my friends visited the country and was absolutely smitten with it. He said Beirut became one of his favorite traveling destinations for being safe, tourists-friendly and exciting. He said he loved the fact that the city was very green despite the fact it's situated in the desert. Also, though Lebanon is an Arabic country, you can buy alcohol 24/7 with no restrictions. My friend also noted Beirut looked so much like Paris or Rome to him, with less tourists, though.
For all shopaholics like me it's a great place to visit to buy designer stuff (according to my friend, he saw the following designer boutiques in the city: Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Prada, D&G, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Fendi, Dior, Cerutti, Gianfranco Ferre, Celine, Cartier, Corneliani, Zegna, Roberto Cavalli, Sergio Rossi, Miu Miu, Vivienne Westwood, Diesel, Rolex, Brioni, Canali, Giorgio Armani, Tiffany & Co, Larishka, Kenzo, Bluemarine, Furla, Boggi, Jimmy Choo, Tod's, Chanel, etc)
what i love about hotels in Beirut is that you can use king size beds instead of loungers by the pool or jacuzzi. awesome!
