Color-blocking trend was introduced by Yves Saint Laurent as a women’s fashion trend back in 1970s. This colorful trend made a significant comeback since then in spring/summer 2009 collections of such high end designers as Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior, Lanvin, Dries Van Noten and Salvatore Ferragamo.

The previous year the color-blocking trend became a fashion mainstream again in women’s fashion during spring/summer 2011 period. This style can be defined as pairing of two or more solid colors in one ensemble. For instance, one can composite the outfits that would consist of warm, cool or complimentary colors. Besides the prevalence in clothing, color-blocking became a widespread trend in women’s cosmetics, accessories, jewelry and footwear as well.

In addition to the obvious advantages like the cheerful and pretty color-combinations, there is still a negative moment: it doesn’t allow designers to place darker and lighter colors from the strategic point of view- darker gamma on the waist and hips and brighter ones on areas they want to outline.

As we expected, color-blocking didn’t skirt the menswear as well. Latest spring/summer menswear collections offer the abundance of the vibrant colors starting from clothes such as men’s trousers, shorts, sport coats, shirts and accessories: socks, ties, belts, bags, shoes and loafers. Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Prada, DSquared2, Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci- all of these high fashion brands were contaminated with this cheerful tendency.

Color-blocking tips
The simplest way to be in the mainstream is mixing the colors of two color ranges. You may choose either from the warm gamma such as red, orange and yellow or a cool one including green, blue and violet while making up an ensemble. The small adding of white, black and grey will work with both options.

Combining contrasting colors

Complimentary colors (those opposite to the color wheel) look great together by giving the harmonious look to the ensemble. Red with green, yellow with violet and blue with orange- these are the three sure options of combining the complementary colors. Yellow with blue or yellow with violet or fuchsias combinations are also a great choice.
