There is no need to spend hours practicing your best photo poses in front of the mirror since the new study has a scientifically proven answer on this point. According to the latest study people of both sexes look more attractive when pictured on their left side rather than on the right.
Seems like this trick was known back in the time of oil paintings when posers tended to show the left side of their face and apparently nothing has changed since then.
The study was carried by James Schirillo, the psychology professor from the Wake Forest University, and the co-author Kelsey Blackburn. Throughout the research the groups of participants were asked to look at photos.
First they were shown the black and white photos of men and women, and then the digitally altered version showing the same people from the other side. In general the photos portraying photos from the left side were highly liked by the viewers and provoked the favorable reaction. Besides, it was noticed that while looking at these photos, viewers’ pupils tended to widen, which signifies that they found them to be more appealing.
Researchers told the Huttington Post:
"Our results suggest that posers’ left cheeks tend to exhibit a greater intensity of emotion, which observers find more aesthetically pleasing.”
Despite the fact that symmetric faces are used to be more attractive, people’s faces as a rule are asymmetrical.
They continued:
"Our findings provide support for a number of concepts–the notions of lateralized emotion and right hemispheric dominance with the right side of the brain controlling the left side of the face during emotional expression.”
