Lima's modeling career began with a friend of hers who didn't want to enter a modeling contest alone. They both sent pictures and soon the contest sponsor asked Lima to come out for the competition. After signing with an agency Lima's career began expanding giving her features in numerous international editions of Vogue and Marie Claire. She's walked runways for likes as Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, and Valentino, among others.
Her first fashion show for Victoria's Secret was in 1999. In 2000 she has been contracted as an Angel. Lima has appeared on subsequent shows, opening the show in 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2010.
Adriana Lima's first acting role was alongside Mickey Rourke and Forest Whitaker, in The Follow (2001), a short film in BMW's series The Hire, starring Clive Owen and directed by Wong Kar-wai. She has also appeared with other Angels as herself in a guest spot in the series How I Met Your Mother in November 2007. In 2008, Lima appeared on the American television series Ugly Betty yet again as herself.
One of Adriana Lima's latest impressive works is a Vogue Brazil (February 2011) photo shoot with Fabio Bartelt as photographer.
